The new World Trade Center is a complex of
buildings being built in Lower Manhattan, New York
City, United States, replacing the original complex of
seven buildings with the same name on the same
site. The World Trade aims to accommodate safe and
sustainable commercial space, convenient
transportation, and a destination cultural center. The
original World Trade Center opened in 1973 with
iconic twin towers and five additional skyscrapers.
The One World Trade Center, also known as the
North Tower, and Two World Trade Center - the
South Tower commonly known as the Twin Towers
were the tallest buildings in the world when they
were completed in 1971, before being overtaken by
the Sears Tower in 1973. The Twin Towers along
with several other World Trade Center complexes
were destroyed in the September 11 attacks of 2011.
